lake, invisible
Creation of these artificial 'Lakes' and Patterson River (starting with the "Patterson Cut" of 1879) completely drained the vast Carrum Carrum Swamp and halted the flow of the once steady Kananook Creek. The loss of Kananook Creek and the Carrum wetlands meant that a whole ecosystem and way of life for the indigenous population was lost forever. There was no form of consultation with the traditional owners of the land.
Carrum Carrum swamp and the Kananook Creek system (then a river) was once a vast ecosystem of 5000 hectares, its destruction drove out the remaining owners of the land (Bunarong tribe) and caused incalculable damage to many migrating bird populations.
