Torrevieja

Spain / Alacant / Torrevieja /

Torrevieja is a busy but not massive city. There are some nice beaches but they are crowded in the summer, there are a vast amount of eateries and bars along the coast and in the near by streets. The market is a great place to visit. Very beautiful cost, the back streets are full of graffiti but even that looks nice. You will bump into the odd beggar but they rarely seem threatening.Oh, and try the crazy golf its a lot of fun.

The city orginally developed arounnd the Salt extraction industry which boomed in the 19th century. The salt was extracted in the lagoons surronding the city by evaporation, and was exported through the port, and the railway brought an influx of both workers and leisure traffic. The railway was closed by the 1980s, though the salt and leisure industries survived and the city has a large number of Northern Europeans who own second or retirement homes. Uncharteristically for a Spanish city of the size, there are a large number of low-rise suburbs, mostly due to the migrant retirees and holiday home developments. Currently, the salt extraction operation is one of the largest in the EU, and accounts for the majority of the port's commercial traffic.
