Fresh water mussels from here were formerly used as bait by the inshore fishermen of Collieston. There is a pearl from an Ythan Mussel in the Scottish Crown.

Salmon used to be caught in nets by fishermen who lived in a "bothy" (small hut) near the sea on the North side of estuary.

The estuary is now part of the Forvie Sands nature reserve.
