Cape of Lefkatas

Greece / Levkas / Nidrion /
 mountain, cape (geography)

Cape Lefkatas at the southwestern tip of the island has fragments of the ruined temple of Apollo Leucatas; nearby are the 200-ft white cliffs that give the island its Greek name. In antiquity they served as a trial by ordeal (the "Lefkadian leap") for accused persons, survivors being picked up by boat. It is the place where Sappho allegedly leapt to her death from the 100 foot (30m) high cliffs.

  • Well, I've added some photos taken by me. The cliffs are so vertical that I was scared to approach too near (so the first photo isn't so good! sorry). See also the photos of the lighthouse.
