built 1814. The only church in Riga with golden dome. Named by rich merchant in Riga who supported this church for a good while
Grebenščikova iela named after Aleksandr Grebenščikov who, in 1760, founded a community of 'Old Believers' here. The first church, which was made of wood, was rebuilt in 1814. The tower with its golden dome (the only one in Riga) was built by Reinhold Schmaeling in 1906. The church is home to one of the world's largest congregations of Old Believers, an Orthodox Christian sect that fled persecution in Russia in the 18th century.
