Old Shendi (Shendi)

From here was the beginning of the city of Shendi about 4000 years ago and perhaps more than that. But it is certain that this area has witnessed continuous and uninterrupted habitation throughout these years. This is indicated by the cemeteries and some of the antiquities discovered in the vicinity of this area. When Stone Age man began to gradually shift to agriculture on the banks of rivers, he needed a suitable place and location to benefit from irrigation by flooding after the water receded. This area, which was elevated above the risk of flooding, was close to the permanent water resources in the river throughout the year and overlooked the Great Kurru, which represented a suitable and excellent location for these urban communities.
