Papallacta is a small town on the eastern side of the continental divide. Above the town itself there are hotsprings. HCJB under the direction of Robert Wittig installed a Hydroelectric plant here initially in 1965. After that a second plant was installed. Having electricity has greatly benefited the town. Now also water is taken from the Papallacta river and sent to Quito.
The town is beautiful due to the abundant rain all year around. Many types of hummingbirds live in this area and feast upon the flowers. Papallacta means Land of Potatoes in Quicha.
