The Dutch Ministry of Defence has decided that the satellite interception station in Zoutkamp has to be closed by 1 January 2008. With the closure, the two satellite dishes of the Nationale Signals Intelligence Organisatie (NSO) will lose its function. With the closure of the base, the plans for another 22 dishes have also been cancelled. The MoD has definitively made a decision to continue its operations near the Frisian village of Burum. Citizens of Zoutkamp have demonstrated for years against the base for fear of terrorist attacks.
