The first St John the Baptist Church was built in 1843-the 'Black Church' of which only the tower and spire survive unchanged today. The present church was built between 1892 and 1904 and was consecrated by Bishop Gore on the 13th February 1904.

In 1972 offices and vestries were constructed within the nave. The refectory and children's room were added then and the organ was moved to it's current position at the west end of the nave over the refectory. Recently the choir stalls have been returned to the chancel and the lady chapel has been reordered.
