CGAS Borinquen is the Southernmost major US Coast Guard Air Station in the service and in the 7th District, and operates under the command of Sector San Juan. The base has a large Area Of Responsibility, encompassing both the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the adjacent waters to the outermost extent of the EEZ. Being the major airbase for Sector San Juan, CGAS Borinquen is also responsible for Search and Rescue Operations for the Eastern Caribbean Sea area east of and including the Dominican Republic and the Lesser Antilles islands chain.
The station utilizes squadrons of HU-25 "Guardian" Medium Range Surveillance Aircraft and H-65 "Dolphin" Short Range Recovery Helicopters to perform its missions.
