Pavlovsk (Russian: Па́вловск "[the town] of Pavel" after Emperor Pavel (Paul) of Russia) is a municipal town in Pushkinsky District in the suburban part of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia, located 30 kilometers (19 mi) south from St. Petersburg proper and about 4 kilometers (2.5 mi) southeast from Pushkin. Population: 16,087 (2010 Census). Known since the late 18th century, when Saint Petersburg was the capital of Russian Empire, as a countryside residence of Russian royal family commissioned creation of the town's landmark -palace with a large park, now parts of its federal museum reserve. The town developed around the Pavlovsk Palace, a major residence of the Russian imperial family. Between 1918 and 1944, its official name was Slutsk, after the revolutionary Vera Slutskaya, and then was changed back to Pavlovsk. Pavlovsk is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments".

Pavlovsk was founded in 1777 as the village of Pavlovsk, name the future heir to the throne of Emperor Paul I, given to his mother, Catherine II, which begins here the construction of future residences. C Paul's reign on the throne in 1796 Pavlovsk became the imperial residence and obtain city status. After the death of the Emperor in Pavlovsk live widow Maria Feodorovna, in which the palace and park reach flowering. But with the death of the empress in 1828 begins sunset Pavlovsk, as the imperial residence.
He turns first to his brother Nicholas I Pavlovich Michael, then to Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, who does not pay enough attention to the unique palace-park complex. In 1837 - becomes the ultimate Pavlovsk station first railroad in Russia and begins his heyday as a place of country walks Petersburgers. In the second half of XIX century Pavlovskiy station becomes a place of musical concerts, which is conducted by Johann Strauss.

In 1917 the palace and park nationalized, planned construction of a museum, but since 1926 the palace was turned into a warehouse, a collection looted. Just before the war at the government level, it was decided to establish a museum, but already the summer of 1941 the museum staff involved in saving the museum collections. By September 1941 most of the collections removed or hidden in caches. During the war, the palace and park, got into a zone of occupation of the German troops, severely affected (Pavlovsk was released in January 1944). In 1946-1973 almost restored, although the restoration work goes so far.
The city - the magnificent palace and park ensemble (the State Museum-Reserve «Pavlovsk»), created by the great classicist architects Charles Cameron, Vincenzo Brenna, Andrei Voronikhin and others. Center for the ensemble - the palace, built in 1782-1786 and repeated in 1797-1824 pereplanirovanny (at the last stage in the construction of the palace attended the famous Carlo Rossi), consists of a main building and side wings, connected with the gallery-transitions. Before the palace - a monument to the founder of Pavlovsk - Paul I. Adjacent to the castle park was created in English (landscape) style with many romantic buildings. One of the world's largest (600 hectares).

In 1989, the Pavlovsk was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list
