Kilmainham Gaol (sometimes referred to by the modern American English version, Kilmainham Jail) is a former prison located in Kilmainham in Dublin. It is now a museum.

Kilmainham Gaol opened in 1796, four years before the Act of Union abolished the Irish Parliament in Dublin and thus making Ireland a part of the United Kingdom. It closed in 1924, two years after the signing of a Treaty that restored a measure of independence to the south of Ireland, a step that led ultimately to the declaration of a Republic in 1949. The gaol is now a National Monument, and has been opened to the public as a Museum that tells the story of the gaol's role in Ireland's troubled path to independence. It was in the yard of the gaol that the leaders of the Easter Rising were executed.
