It commemorates the Lebanese opponents to the Ottoman oppressive rule who were publicly hanged in 1915 by orders of Ottoman army commander Jamal Basha.
Among those hanged are reported to have been Philip and Farid el-Khazen, Sheikh Ahmad Tabbara, Father Joseph Hayek, Omar Hamad, Abd el-Wahab al-Inglizi and the Mahmassani brothers.
