Bhowanipore (Kolkata)

Bhowanipore or Bhabanipur is the oldest locality of South Kolkata. It is located just south of the Lower Circular Road (now A.J.C. Bose Road). It is the second largest locality in South Kolkata after Ballygunge. The locality has its boundary touching the AJC Bose Road, Maidan, Victoria Memorial and consists of well-known and posh localities like Elgin Road, Gokhale Road, Woodburn Park, Bakulbagan Road, Harish Mukherjee Road, Beltala Road, Townshend Road and parts of Chakraberia & Lansdowne. The locality has an illustrious past and abound with stories of great men and women who lived here,although in the recent years it has lost much of its glory to Ballygunge(which has gone ahead in terms of good roads,posh locales,and modern day developments).

Beside our house a doctor was living. He became an author and his pen name was Anando Kishore Munsi.He wroue DACTARER DIARY. His true name was Atulananda DasGupta. His daughter Anjana was married to fa ilm director from Bombay. His name was H.S. Rawal. Infront of my house, there was a family Sen. In his house film actress Mala Sinha was a regular visitor. Tansen Sangeet Sammeelan (at the top Jadin Das Library) was the next building. There was a house. It was known as JOJE BARI. Film actress Kaberi Bose was lving there. Walking through Indra Roy Road and 68 Palli Puja corner we used to pass by UttamKumar's house to reach Jadubabur Bazar. It was a happy time. Kolkata is still the soul of India. Kolkata is a city of diversities with good people and bad people. Many sections of the city are dirty, but one will always find many lotus flowers in this dirt and mud.
