The first palace on the site was built in the 1700s, during the French colonial period as the Government Palace. It was destroyed in 1869 during a rebel revolt.

The second National Palace was built in 1881 and was destroyed by a bomb blast in the early morning of 8 August 1912, claiming the lives of then President Dessalines M. Cincinnatus Leconte and three hundred Haitian soldiers.

The palace was rebuilt from 1914 to 1920, during the US Marine occupation of Haiti. The palace was heavily damaged by an earthquake in January, 2010, with several sections completely collapsed. In April 2010, the Haitian government announced plans to demolish the palace in preparation for reconstruction. Demolition and clearance of the site took place between September and December 2012.
