The Pechenihy Reservoir was built to supply Kharkiv with fresh water on the site of the small Kochetok Reservoir, built in 1936.
It was built from 1958 to 1962.
The reservoir was filled from August 1962 and gradually continued until the 1964 spring floods. Since then, the volume of the reservoir has remained unchanged.

• mirror area: 8620 hectares
• length: 75 km;
• average width: 1.15 km
• maximum width: 4.0 km
• average depth: 4.44 m
• maximum depth: 14.0 m
