  • Bateshwar is temple town of Bhadawar and is located 70 kms from Agra. This unexplored town came to lime light as the birthplace of the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee. Bateshwar is one of the oldest towns in Agra having mythological and historical importance. As per the legend ancient name of Batehwar was Sorpur, established by Lord Shri Krishna’s grandfather Suryasen. Sorpur is said to be birthplace of Lord Krishna’s mother and one of the ghat is known as “Kansa Kagaar” named after the cruel “Mama” of Lord Krishna. Bateshwar also finds its mention in the holy scriptures of Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Matsya Purana. During 16th Century, the Raja Badan Singh of the Bhadawar dynasty named Sorpur as Batehswar. Raja Badan singh shifted his capital from Mai to Batehswar. Poet Chatraa of Raja Bhadawar’s darbar has described Batehswar in his poem “Sudha-Saar” as: “मथुरामंडल में बसै, देश भदावर ग्राम। ऊखल तहाँ प्रसिद्ध महि, क्षेत्र बटेश्वर नाम।। “ Bateshwar is Bahawar's best place to visit, in my next post i will discuss more about this magificant place lying on the holy bank of Yuamuna. Do you kown why Raja Badan Singh made 108-temples. And the Story goes as .... them will have daughter, he will marry her to others boy. But unfortunately both got the girl child. The Raja of Bhadawar to maintain his vow to his friend, hide the girl and kept her disguised as a son, he married her in disguise of son to Raja Parmar’s daughter. After the marriage, new bride realised that her prince charming is in reality a girl. The Raja Parmar - father of bride, retaliated by declaring war. The Raja Bhadawar’s daughter (the Groom) blamed herself for blood-battle and she jumped into Yamuna, making the war to end. It is said that Lord Shiva himself rescued her from drowning in Yamuna. Raja of Bhadawar, built 108 temples of Lord Shiva at the very place where Lord Shiva rescued her, temples were constructed in such a way that Yamuna formed crescent curve by changing her natural course. Bateshwarnath, one of the names of Lord Shiva inspired the name of this place as BATESHWAR. Main temple houses holy Shiva lingam, which is said to be self-made. During Mugal Empire, when Aurangzeb was on his temples destruction fling he tried to destroy Bateshwar temples but he failed, as the saying goes when he attacked the Shiva lingam with his sword, water flowed out. He attacked again this time milk flowed out. On his final attempt, blood flowed out. He was astounded and fled the place for fear and never came back. Today one can see this Shiva lingam having heavy cuts marks of Aurangzeb’s sword. Local people have been visiting this place centuries, especially on “Kartik Purnima”(Early November) which is the most auspicious period for praying at the temples, at this time a big fair is also organised and people come to take a holy dip in the river Yamuna.
