heritage, interesting place, floodgate
The old Iwabuchi Sluice Gate is also known as the Red Sluice Gate because it is painted bright red. The gate was designed in 1924 by Akira Aoyama, the only Japanese architect who took part in the construction of the Panama Canal. The Red Sluice Gate had been protecting the lowland area from floods until 1982 when it was replaced by a new sluice gate. With the rich flow of the Arakawa River and abundant greenery, the broad, open expanse of the surrounding area is being the favored site for long walks and fishing. Outdoor facilities such as the Moonlight stand plaza, where is aimed for various events, and the Arakawa Museum of Aqua (amoa) are this area's most recent features.
