Ponte Leproso

Italy / Campania / Benevento /

The Ponte Leproso ("Leprous bridge") was originally an ancient Roman bridge that carried the Appian Way over the river Sabato. It was restored and restructured several times over the centuries. Formerly called Ponte Marmoreo, the bridge may owe its current name to the presence of a nearby leper colony in the Middle Ages.
