First of many Victoria Cross awards resulting from the action of 22 January 1879 went to Private Samuel Wassall for his rescue, under fire, of a stricken comrade from the rain swollen Buffalo River at Fugitives' Drift.
Original name of this crossing was Sotondosi's Drift.
