This is a man-made tunnel that spans about one half of a mile. I am almost certain that it belongs to Metro-North. To access this tunnel, which is large enough for very large vehicle to pass through, park in the northeast corner of the New Hamburg train station. There is a yellow gate to prevent vehicular traffic from entering the tunnel. Walk past this gate and the entrance to the tunnel will be visible. About 50 meters into the tunnel there is an opening in the ceiling. Normally, there is water flowing in from this opening. In the summer months, the temperature in the tunnel can be significantly lower than the temperature outside. If I am correct about the ownership of this property, MTA police might issue trespassing summons to those found here.

The original purpose for this tunnel is unknown to me at this time. About seven year ago there was no gate to prevent vehicles from entering the tunnel and I drove through it on a few occasions.

  • This tunnel was constructed in the mid-19th century for the railroad. Around the 1890s (I think) the tracks were moved to their current location.
