The city of Batavia was built by the Dutch East India Company (VoC) over the recently-demolished city of Jayakarta/Jacatra in 1620 through 1650. The city served as the capital of the Dutch East Indies. The outline of the original city of Batavia is still visible, shaped by the city's old canal system. Although most of the canals have been filled in over time, the streets and alleys that once ran parallel to the canals still exist, and some narrow rows of buildings sit inside the filled canals.

Kemungkinan disinilah letaknya Chatteu Batavia yang dibangun awal abad 17, yang memulai era Penjajahan Belanda.
