The history of all Estonian strongholds is largely similar: the stone buildings erected in the 12th century beyond the ancient fortification wall acquired the appearance of convent buildings over the centuries. The 17th century wars had a disastrous effect on the powerful fortifications; later they were demolished and used as building materials. The Rakvere stronghold ruins were conserved and partly reconstructed in the 1980s.
