Pan American Plaza is dedicated in commemoration of the 1987 Pan American Games X hosted by Indianapolis. The plaza is a frequent staging area for live television broadcasts during sporting events (e.g. NCAA Final Four, B1G Ten Championship, Super Bowl XLVI, etc.). It is built atop a 1,100-space underground public parking garage.
In October 2018, $120 million plans were announced to redevelop the plaza. The plans include a 50,000 square-foot ballroom attached to the Indiana Convention Center over S. Capitol Ave. and two new high-rise hotels including 1,400 rooms.
