ghost town, GULAG
Currently, the village Yur-Shor is conditionally closed. In 2006, however, there were 542 inhabitants. It arose during the construction of the mine number 29 or Ure-Shore in 1944. The full name of the village is Izyurvorshor (by name brook, right tributary of the river Vorkuta). Translated from the Komi means "head of stone flow", because at the mouth of the creek is limestone rock reminiscent of a human head. Here, the mine is located near the memorial cemetery, where inmates are buried ARS mine № 29. The uprising took place on Aug. 1, 1953 when, after Stalin's death, political prisoners demanded to review the case (subject only to criminal amnesty for prisoners). The rebels have refused to go to work, for which they were herded into the courtyard and shot with machine gun from towers. Information about deaths and injuries differ, but according to some sources, there were about 40 people killed and about 134 people wounded. Currently, a large part of the settlement is abandoned and represents yet another "dead city". Not far from the village, near the highway, stands a monument - a monument of 35 miners killed in an accident on Sept. 23, 1980.
