This railroad bridge carries the Metro North railroad over the entrance to the Wappingers Creek. At one point, the bridge had the ability to raise to allow boat traffic to enter and leave the creek. What remains of the machinery to lift the bridge is still housed in a metal shack on the west side of the bridge (the square on the west side of the bridge). To access the machine house, walk halfway onto the bridge. Once there, you will notice a ladder on the west side of the bridge that leads up to a platform. Climb the ladder up to the platform. Once on the platform there is another ladder that leads down the outside of the bridge to the machine house. Extreme care must be taken as trains pass through this area at a high rate of speed. There is a warning bell that sounds when a train is approaching. This is Metro North property and the MTA police will issue you a trespassing summons if you are found in this area.
