The history of this castle goes back more than 1000 years. According to tradition, it was founded by Sant'Anselmo, the abbot of Nonantola, for defense of the abbey's territories. The building as it stands today is the end product of many phases of construction by many owners who oversaw its evolution from stronghold to imposing noble residence.
