Construction was authorized on April 12, 1792 under President George Washington by The Second United States Congress.
It is the fourth oldest operating lighthouse in the US.
It was the first public works project of the United States with construction beginning on June 7, 1796 and completed November 5, 1796.
And created an important guide as the eastern most point on the south shore of Long Island heading to New York harbor approx. 120 miles to the west.

Montauk Lighthouse is quite possibly the most recognized structure on Long Island. Standing at the base of the easternmost part of New York State it has become a major tourist attraction to an otherwise relatively quiet south fork community.
