This military cemetery on the outskirts of Bitburg attracted worldwide attention in the spring of 1985, when U.S. President Ronald Reagan visited and laid a wreath here at the suggestion of West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Reagan's gesture of homage sparked controversy and protest, especially on the part of Jews and World War II veterans, because 49 of the graves belonged to members of the Nazi Waffen-SS.
