Corregidor Island is a significant islet with high hills located at the entrance of Manila Bay in southwestern Luzon Island in the Philippines. Due to this location, and its suitability for fortification, Corregidor has in past centuries been the location of large amounts fortified coastal artillery and ammunition magazines to defend the important harbor of Manila Bay - and its large adjacent City of Manila - from attack by any hostile warships that might approach it during wartime. At times during the first half of the 20th century, Corregidor was also the site of a small military airfield, also built for the defense of Manila Bay.

Set apart from public domain for military purposes in 1902. It was designated Fort Mills in honor of Brig. Gen. Samuel M. Mills, US Army, Chief of Artillery 1905–06.
