fortification, mansion / manor house / villa, interesting place, Grade I Listed (UK)
Beverstone Castle was originally a medieval stone fortified manor house, defended by a wide ditch. The castle was founded by Maurice de Gaunt in 1229. In the early 14th century, Thomas, Lord Berkeley remodelled the castle, building a small quadrangular stronghold, with a twin-towered gatehouse. Sadly after Civil War slighting, only the west range and one D-shaped tower of the gatehouse remains.
