The most important cultural center in Mexico, this structure was begun in 1904 under President Porfirio Diaz as an opera house, designed by architect Adamo Boari. Its Art Nouveau facade was completed, but construction stopped in 1910 with the beginning of the Mexican Revolution and the building sat unfinished for over twenty years, until it was completed as a cultural center, museum and opera hiouse, with its interiors in the Art Deco style, by architect Francisco Mariscal in 1936.
