Until 1969 this was the site of Deepdene House, rather a a splendid Victorian country house built by the very wealthy Thomas Hope, a writer and collector. The Hope Family are best known for giving their name to the Hope Diamond, which at one time resided in their collection here. In the 1890s Deepdene was let to Lily, Duchess of Marlborough, and guests included the Prince of Wales and a young Winston Churchill.

It later became an hotel and was taken over by the Southern Railway as wartime headquarters when London was deemed too dangerous due to German bombing. After the war it became the offices of British Railways, Southern Region and remained so until c.1965. Deemed too expensive to renovate or maintain, it was demolished in 1969.
