Part of the mountain blasted many years ago to allow State Route 309 to pass into the "Back Mountain" area of Luzerne County. Elevation- 900 feet (approx) on highway. On Mountain- 1300+ ft.

On icy winter mornings the cut can turn into a toboggan run for carless drivers, and one or two accidents can back traffic up for miles...and hours.
