The school has its campus in the historic city of Dresden, which is renowned for its outstanding beauty, culture and educational institutions. DIS was founded in 1996 by government and community leaders from Stadt Dresden und Land Sachsen. The school, which is a non-profit organization, meets the needs of the growing expatriate community and is an essential element in promoting the economic development of the Dresden region. It has become a vital part of the cultural and economic life of this region. DIS is a member of the European Council of International Schools and is an International Baccalaureate World School, and as such its program is regularly evaluated and assessed. DIS has grown steadily from 13 pupils in 1996 to 540 from 40 nations in August 2007.
