Founded 1844 by Doukhobor exiles from Slavyansk, Tavria (Taurida), now south Ukraine. Slavyanka means "little Slavic girl" in Russian. Doukhbors built several flour mills. 1895 Doukhobors burned guns at the west edge of town, in Slavyansky khutor. From 1899 to 1930, about 1/3 of Doukhobors moved to Canada. During 1930s became "Ilich Way" Collective Farm (Kolkhoz Put' Ilicha), after Lenin's patronymic, middle name. Now mostly Azeri, some Doukhobors, and 2 large Doukhobor cemeteries.
