The Dardanelles (Turkish: Çanakkale Boğazı, Greek: Δαρδανέλλια, Dardanellia), is a narrow strait in northwestern Turkey connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara.
The ancient name of this narrow strait was Hellespont (Greek: Eλλήσποντος, Hellespontos). It was so called from Helle, the daughter of Athamas, who was drowned here in the mythology of the Golden Fleece.
