Russian Orthodox church built locally in the early 2000's, probably strategically located in an effort to maximize Russia's negotiating position with China on the settling of the international boundary. In 2004, China and Russia agreed to divide this island (Bear Island) which had been occupied entirely by Russia, claimed in its entirety by China, running the international boundary within a few meters of this church.
