Opened by the Queen Mother in 1969, it carries the M8 across the River Clyde, and is the busiest river crossing in Europe. At the time of its construction, it was projected to carry 20,000 vehicles per day, when by 1990 it was five times that number in reality.
As a result, serious structural deterioration was discovered in the bridge around that time, which triggered a decade-long refurbishment project to physically lift the entire structure on hydraulic jacks whilst new piers were built on the river bank.
Standing beneath it is far more impressive than driving across it – it has an almost cathedral-like vista which is at odds with the frenetic amount of traffic going directly over your head on the M8!
