Aqualate Hall was first erected by Sir Thomas Skrymsher, who died in 1633. It was later rebuilt and enlarged by Sir John Fenton Boughey, 2nd Baronet of Boughey (1784-1823) MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1812 and Staffordshire in 1820-23.
