The community of Riehen lies on the northern edge of Basel and is a smaller and more rural neighbour of the northwest Swiss conglomeration. It is, however, deceptively large and is the second biggest town/city in the region, with 20600 inhabitants. Riehen lies in the valley formed by the Wiese, a tributary of the Rhein that starts in the Black Forest to the north. It has been calculated (by the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration) that Riehen is the best place to live in Switzerland.
