Christian cemetery in the heart of the city near the crossing of Park Street and AJC Bose Road.
The great Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt was buried here. His statue is erected just outside the gate, where few bengali lines are written :
দাঁড়াও পথিকবর, জন্ম যদি তব বঙ্গে - ....... meaning,
Please wait a little, passer-by, if you are born in Bengal ....

  • DILAPIDATED, UNKEPT AND ALMOST FORGOTTEN. VISITED MY PARENTS, BOTH BURIED HERE AFTER 22 YEARS AND WAS UTTERLY DISMAYED BY THE DECAY I SAW ALL AROUND ME WITH WHAT WAS ONCE STATELY GRAVES NOW MINUS THE MARBLE AND SOME HEAD STONES BEING USED TO PAVE PATHWAYS.
  • I believe this is actually the Lower Circular Road Cemetery. The Scottish cemetery is a little to the South. Can we change the title of this object?
  • Though the first picture does say Scottish Cemetery??
  • Yes! this is the Lower Circular Cemetery. Once upon a time, a well maintained and widely used christian burial ground. Unfortunately, sadly neglected today, in the absence of deceased members families who have migrated west. Surely, the Calcutta Improvement Trust and the Christian Burial Board have some obligation . I guess this place too, is also heading the same way as the Old Park St. cemetery, where Calcutta's founders lie neglected. Denzil Brown
