synagogue, listed building / architectural heritage

The Peitav Shul Synagogue, a stone structure with a Neo-Classic façade, was built at a cost of 150,000 rubles, by Wilhelm Neumann in 1904. It was one of about forty synagogues that functioned in Riga before the Nazi occupation when it was desecrated and confiscated by the Germans who subsequently turned it into a warehouse. It was the only synagogue not destroyed by the Nazis, escaping because of its close proximity to other buildings.
