theatre, auditorium, exhibition centre, concert hall, 1998_construction
SECC Clyde Auditorium, colloquially referred to as the "Armadillo" due to its distinctive shape. Designed by Sir Norman Foster, it was completed in 1998 and has quickly become one of the iconic images of modern Glasgow.
Contrary to popular belief - it is not inspired by the Sydney Opera House which it closely resembles, rather it is supposed to represent interlocking ships' bows - in reference to Clydeside's shipbuilding heritage. More recently, it has garnered some world fame as the place where Susan Boyle was originally auditioned.
