Cement works. The plant, owned by Cemex, dominates the village and obtains its raw material from the Middlegate Lane quarry on the hill above. The plant began operation in 1938 with a single wet-process kiln. The current two more-efficient Lepol-process kilns, each making around 1250 tonnes of cement clinker per day, are in the long building in the centre of the view.
