The Alabama Theatre was built from April to December of 1927 at a cost of $1,500,000. It was originally operated by Paramount's Publix Theatre chain as its flagship for the southeast region of the U.S.. The theater was designed by Graven and Mayger.
The Alabama Theatre was designated as the "Official State Historic Theatre" in 1993 by the Alabama legislature. The theatre was thoroughly cleaned and restored in 1998. It still features its original Mighty Wurlitzer organ. The theatre, having a seating capacity of 2,200, hosts around 250 entertainment events a year. It is one of only two surviving theatres in Birmingham's theatre district, the other being the Lyric Theatre.
The Alabama Theatre was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on February 15, 1977 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 13, 1979:
