The Alabama Theatre was built from April to December of 1927 at a cost of $1,500,000. It was originally operated by Paramount's Publix Theatre chain as its flagship for the southeast region of the U.S.. The theater was designed by Graven and Mayger.

The Alabama Theatre was designated as the "Official State Historic Theatre" in 1993 by the Alabama legislature. The theatre was thoroughly cleaned and restored in 1998.
