The location of one of Austria's most important castles of romantic historicism was first mentioned in 1294. Its present day appearance dates back to adaptations undertaken between 1840 and 1888 under the guidance of Leopold Ernst, then master builder of the St.Stephens cathedral in Vienna.
Today Grafenegg castle hosts frequent exhibitions and music festivals. The austrian celebrity-chef Toni Mörwald runs the Castle Hotel & Restaurant "Schloss Grafenegg".
