Chiang Mai is a beautiful quiet city, a must for visiting. It was described in National Geographic Traveler a couple of years ago as "getting ugly." There's too much concrete overwhelming the charm, and too many vehicles without smog control. The air is much cleaner smelling after a rain, or a couple of kilometers out of town.

The moat around the old city is about 1-1/2 kilometers on each side which is a nice walk around the city inside or outside the moat. Visit the parks such as the large one on the southwest corner and observe the locals enjoying themselves. There are many good coffee shops with excellent, locally-grown arabica beans with which to make espresso, lattes, etc.
