Inside the cafe, there is a floodlevel sign in the wall:

In the year 1861, the high level of river De Waal caused an enormous disaster in the city of Nijmegen. King William III went there to see with his own eyes what was going on. His visit was highly appreciated by the citizens of this town.
Here is the translation of the text on this flood level sign. (not grammatically correct, but the original isn't either):

1861

Up until this stone stood the wrathful flood
swallowed life, wealth and labour in its whirlpool
but then also William III! so noble hearted
then You proved to be the father of Your people
the fateful, disastrous year will live forever by the fame
because it founded also forever, Ruler, a pillar in honour of Your name!
