Coolangatta is the local Aboriginal word meaning "Splendid view" - the coastal mountain is only 320 metres high. Alexander Berry - the first settler in the area built and named a ship after the mountain, which later was wrecked off the south east coast of Queensland - hence the name of the town on the Gold Coast located on the NSW border.
